This is me solo hunting in ogre mages. Purple mages give me about 50 exp a pop, green mages about 37, and fierce ogres about 27.

Now I understand the need to scale down exp gain for creatures over one's head so that it's not possible to just partner with a high level adventurer and zoom through the levels, but this is ridiculous. I'm at 5th circle, and goblin archers give me 4 times the experience that dark ogre mages do for absolutely zero risk.

Goblin archers are level 5 creatures. They're perfectly on par for you, so you get 100% of their XP value (50 XP).

Dark ogre mages are level 8 creatures. For your level and class, your level difference factor is 3 (unless you're a Mage, in which case the factor would be 2 due to padding). So you only get 30% of their XP value (75 XP).

There's a number of other factors involved that give bonuses to XP, etc., but you're not just a level or two behind these creatures -- you're a whole three levels. Either hunt purple ogre mages (level 5), green ogre mages (level 6), or go after desert and flame beetles (level 4 and 5).

If they're exceptionally easy for you, then either you're ahead of your game or there's something wrong with their difficulty that I need to take a look at. Let me know on that.

I'm not specifically hunting the dark mages, I'm just killing every ogre I come across in the creepy looking cave in the crystal caverns. ;)
Most of them don't go down quite as easily as that first one, but they're still pretty simple combatants. Here's two more brawls with them:

By the way, is there another place to hunt green and purple ogre mages? I was on the top level of the cave and I was killing as many dark mages as I was any of the others.

Here's another example of what I'm saying. This was not a normal streak for me, but I have been one shotting these guys fairly regularly. I would love to try to move up to Pirates as I am, but I know they're going to teach me like crap (just like dark ogre mages do, but worse).

I'm level 7 now, but this was at level 6. This time I was grouped with another player, but I was hunting this same place solo earlier today at level 5. I'm cutting out all the unneccessary stuff in between attacks just to cut down on the size of this thing.

Summary: 9 ogres killed, 6 of those 9 taken down with one swing from "near perfect health." Sure you won't adjust the exp penalty for a character killing critters a few levels above their own? As is, a character is penalized for hunting a tougher critter.

As my hunting partner put it:***** whispers, "I get more experience, but you slaughter them. They need to make it a bit more balanced. This is silly. You should be able to hunt pirates and get lots of experience."

I'm not sure if this is a reason why Exxy made the exp system the way it is, but this is how I see it.
Having you gain the max exp with a critter of your own level and gaining less as the difference becomes larger, prevents people from just training weapons over and over then going into something that is obviously not meant for their level and slaughtering it. Everyone has dealt with the problem you're facing. I know people who have been stuck in a critter that they cream in a few hits, but they stay just because of the exp.
If you find it boring, take on another weapon. Use a crossbow or train in double weapons or even unarmed combat. If you're sick of struggling with exp vs. how fast you kill them, then find another way. I had that trouble as well when I was in mages. I just killed everything. As long as I get exp and loot I'm happy. :D
Once you hit 8th, consider going into pirates. If you need a hunting partner, give me a shout, that's what I hunt.

Actually, I went and tried pirates last night. At 7th level, I was only getting about 20 exp for each nasty pirate. However, I was getting ~50 exp for each grungy buccaneer, so I stuck it out until I got enough exp for 8th. They went down just as easily as ogres, but oh well. <g>

Stick to pirates and buccs now then.... they give better loot anyway.
